Regardless Tweak I wouldn't have you delete the char, if worse come to worse we can rename it, it's no problem to me.

I think if we just cover our bases on vulgar words/profanity and racists names, we'll be just fine. I mean what if he named his priest AIDS? They have a pell named AID, do we change the name of the spell as well?

I'm fine if people give the disputes here but 'aid' as in healing someone and the disease 'aids' have completely different meanings. It doesn't make sense as a argument.

Also saying stuff like 'cats' offend is a bit far stretched. I think the dispute here is that if someone has a rather heavy illness, they don't want to see it as a name in game. I suppose it's a small amount of diseases that would trigger people because they are commonly known and commonly known to kiil. Nor would you add stuff like 'Cold' or 'Plague'. I think that would be a bit too far. Saying the games not worth playing however because you couldn't use the word cancer is also a huge stretch. Everyone seems to be on the extreme on both sides. It's a bit silly overall.

Could it be perhaps a set dozen words that offend people because they are common when it comes to diseases because they are often the targets of media/etc? If that was the case and the number count was low I don't see why it would be an issue since there often talked about in the media and they are obviously bad diseases. But I mean, banning all words would be odd.

And obviously no one has disputes with adding more racial stuff or anything generally nasty.

Anyways, for the other side of things:

Alot of them don't moderate this. Please note I didn't do the searches to make a mock of it. I'm stated it only for research value.

I also think alot of those words on that list that was linked originally don't need to go on it either. Trying to link ABC to what they write is goofy. Afro, etc. Makes no sense overall and I'd generally not care to add stuff like that.

Again, I'm not pro or for this yet. Still taking in everyones opinions on it.

This also doesn't reflect the filter for chatting either. Normally in chat it's not an issue unless its directed hate/racism/etc.

Cynic bro, take it from the guy who's been trying to get the people in the guild he's in to stop using the word faggot as an insult, you're fighting a losing battle here. Whoever did it clearly isn't part of a community where AIDS is still epidemic, nor I assume are most of the people who don't see why it makes some of us uncomfortable. I registered my complaint against the name and was summarily dismissed for it, so I've ceased trying to explain it.

Yeah, sorry for your association with such bigots and homophones.

My statement was to merely blacklist obvious names (through crit creation/current) that should be; other games have reporting systems and name violation ticketing and flagging systems to report such abuse -- EO does not, which is a thought.

That's my twenty five cents for the topic and night,

I mean I could setup a ticket system to deal with stuff like this and if theres a general consensus that a small amount of players (Mind you, I say players with an S) that have char name issues with a namelike it, I could always approach the player to ask for a name change in order to resolve it. I don\t think there will be many issues like this nor would i comply with the far-fetched ones people seem to be spewing out. I also disagree with deleting, a rename would simply be better.

In the end it's only a character name, and often names like that aren't your main. So I.E. leave it as it is but add more racial obvious ones/etc that wouldn't work 100%, then a ticket system on top of that to deal with some of the issue ones. I honestly think if theres a handful of people who are upset about something we should deal with it right now though. I know you say 'handful? Thats nothing!' but I'm speaking more in relative to our current gaming population. A handful of people is like 15% the population currently. Banning all the diseases would be a bit odd (I.E. Plague which I feel is an OK name).

Would that work?

Tightrope walking. What is offensive to one person does not bother another and vica versa, its all subjective (in most cases, there are off course one or two that are outright offensive... or is that just my subjective opinion?)
This issue is not a problem for me, since I do not make offensive names, and people with names that are offensive to me... well I just think, "what an idiot" and move on.
We all have different tolerences though.

In my opinion "Everything should be allowed, unless specifically forbidden."

It will very hard and controversial to list all possible things that can offend the community in general. Plus, it might be even harder to police compliance to rules - and failure to do that might create a feeling of injustice, if some thing that "someone is getting away".

I would say, just be sensible: Allow people to choose their names, BUT if some name is raising lots of complaints, do something about it.
Besides that, free for all.
