Regarding character names, guild names, or pet names.
Re: Regarding character names, guild names, or pet names.
Sounds like we've only got one person who doesn't agree with the current system. Yeah.. let's put him in charge so he can ban all of my alts names, lol. How about we put Folder in charge. He's unbiased and also not somewhat bitchy.

I'm on the fence about it right now, there's been more than one person upset about a current new alts that came by recently. I don't want to go hardcore about it, but I know theres alot of racism and swears that need to be updated and included and I haven't had time. I'll have to give it a look afterwards. Feel free to take a look at the list too.

KneeGrow_Joe was the nickname given to me when I spent a couple years running with Vice Lords, slangin that dope,

As someone who has named my alt AIDS, which is in cynic's list of what he deems as inappropriate, I feel like I should comment on this. First off, if the general consensus within the admin/dev community of ember deems it unacceptable, I will get rid of it (it would be nice if someone could change the name instead of making me delete it, especially since it has previously been stated that it is okay). I disagree with your Cynic's statement although I have empathy for how he feels, however if you can't use AIDS or other pathogens as character names I think that is playing too far towards political correctness. If you have someone making racist names or names that promote hatred or bigotry, absolutely. If it has obvious vulgar/profane language change or ban. But if we start getting into every little detail of what is offensive to even 1 person, that list can get extensive. Tweak for example, tweak is about drugs (although I did not receive that nickname due to drugs but due to being up for 3 days straight pulling operations in Iraq). If someone names a character Dog and my kid was killed by a dog. My family is all Jewish, so a name like Hitler would be quite offensive to my wife and kids, but I personally don't care and wouldn't care if someone made a name like that. What about other pathogens? I plan on a couple other characters, that I made on different accounts but I'm going to redo them on this one, Clostridium Difficile, Clostridium Botulinium, and Clostridium Tetanii. All three are pathogens that can kill people C. Diff, Botulism, and Tetanus. I am not a dev on this game and I am not an admin on this game, however I would like to state my opinion on the subject. Again, it is all up to you guys and I will respect what you all decide. Just if it will apply to my character AIDS, i'd appreciate if you all could change his name in the files for me to, idk Merlin or some other magician, rather than make me lose the work I've put in after i'm told that its okay. See you all in game!

I kind of lean towards Tweak on this.
If we went around banning names based on what offends a person that list could get crazy
Im offended by cats, Cats gets added to list
Bob is offended by Halloween and anything associated with it, scary names get added to the list
etc
etc
etc
I think if we just cover our bases on vulgar words/profanity and racists names, we'll be just fine. I mean what if he named his priest AIDS? They have a pell named AID, do we change the name of the spell as well?
We're all adults. I think we've heard and said far worse than anything thats been seen in game.

Vulgarity/racial slur/STD in crit names will only detour newbies; in general, it'll push people further from enjoying the game if they're offended (or even diagnosed themselves with said diseases/tortured with racial slurs daily). Not to call this place a "safe place," but It's just easier to make a blacklist on certain slur/names and get it over with so we all can have fun without someone named "FUCKYOUSLUR".

I mean, seriously.. It's just a more professional approach to a game we all want to be great. This isn't RoK.
Re: Regarding character names, guild names, or pet names.
I'm going to weigh in on this issue. While I think there should be a filter and that's fine since we don't want some words in game...like FuckYourShit...or some other randomly ughish name. I don't see the need to go overly P.C about it either. This is a game, and playing with names is something people like to do. It's part and parcel of playing in a game like this.
If everyone is afraid of being offended by something then pretty soon all the fun goes out of the game because everyone has to watch what they say, do, and how they act while playing. Then people go elsewhere. I hate to say this but if you're offended by a disease name? Grow a thicker skin. Seriously. Or, better yet, go play the game and get over it. Why? Because even if this is a game who's to say someone won't take offense at something you do, say, or name your character and then where will you be? I had a friend who had AIDS. Know what he named a couple of his characters in a different game he and I played together? HIV and AIDS. He thought it was great fun.
There's a fine line between trying to filter swear words and such and filtering out names just because you don't like them and are being overly sensitive simply because it seems to be 'the right thing to do'. Having a PG13 filter is fine since, eventually, we're hoping to pull in younger players. It's even understandable. But if you're going to ramp the filter up to eleven and make it so only certain words are okay then the fun goes out of the game and if a game isn't fun? Then it's not worth playing. Seriously. I've walked away from plenty of games that weren't fun. I play this one (when I'm not busy building) because it is. Please don't ruin that. Not for me and not for the others who play.
