That's why I said kiddy hackers. Configuring and distributing a bot so you won't get caught though takes a little more skill and is harder to stop. The best way to stop it is to submit the logs the the FBI and your ISP then let them go after the person. There are always ways of stopping those types of attacks. Having backbone providers blacklist the perpetrator or letting the FBI put them in prison is the best. I had a guy in California blacklisted by QWest and he basically had no access at all to the internet except through public wifi. Even then they blacklisted his hardware ID so he could only connect on certain types of networks. Never think you are such a good hacker that you can't be caught or suffer the consequences.

Have fun getting the american FBI to get involved with Botnet hosted on a dedicated server based out of the Nederlands bring charges against someone whom is not even a resident of the united states, over a small MUD based game being knocked off line.

Dutch cybercrime laws were changed in 2006. In 2010 they were tightened a bit more. Although they have their hands full of child porn problems, they are going out of their way to cooperate with foreign governments. There are also international agreements that have been signed over the last 6 years that provide for extradition of cyber criminals no matter the scope of their actions. Although it would be more likely they would use the provisions in the law to try the person locally and put them in a local prison for small scale attacks on an international entity.

Edit: Also, if the server is hosted on a shared hosting platform you aren't just knocking the small MUD offline. You could be taking up to 8 sites offline. One of them could be a retail site or even a subcontractor site for a security firm. This isn't 1998 so I wouldn't be so sure of myself were I reaching across international boundries to mess with a target I don't have confirmation on. We know you aren't taking down the Clinton email server due to it being tied with this one but who knows what else is on it.

I'd rather not bother getting into politics of it all unless there was a real issue afterwards. It would do the game more harm then good as a result though trying to deal with something like this because none of it would be an instant fix. If it was a problem daily I'd see too it, but I've had a chat with him, he seems like a good bloke and said he won't be messing with the game anymore.

Going to close this topic though, it's not really up for debate. 8) If there are no problems there is no point keeping a topic which is going to start a flame when things are resolved.

Mess with the bull, you'll get the horns 8)
