Friend Chat?

Postby Lateralus » Sun May 14, 2017 12:02 am

I have had a few new players ask about this as well as some vets suggest it. I assume it was on the list at some time but might have fallen through the cracks. Anyways something like a friend list that you can type /friend into and see who all is on along with a /fc type message channel would be pretty great for interaction.

I think i brought this up as an option in the guild diversity thread to lessen the need for being in a big clan.

Not sure if it's more preferable to have this, or global chat, or both.

Anyway, my main question with friend chat is how would it work in the following situation:

Imagine there's 3 people:
Lateralus is friends with Eld
Lateralus is friends with _xXx_King_Of_Douches_xXx_
Eld is NOT friends with _xXx_King_Of_Douches_xXx_

Wouldn't _xXx_King_Of_Douches_xXx_ get frustrated if they only saw one half of a conversation? Now expand out this example and imagine it with people having friend lists of 10+ people, it might just get more confusing and annoying rather than helpful?

Are there any ways we could get around this, or would it literally turn into people telling other people to friend people to keep up with the conversation?

Same questions crossed my mind.

Wonder if if could build off existing commands we already have. For example:

/f could be like /g but only show ppl on your friends list who are online.

/fc could be like /pc except you don't need to be in same room to invite ppl and can build this temporary group chats with more than 6 ppl... Kinda like starting a party but for chatting... (it would probably work like a whatsapp group chat where ppl get invited into one and then can leave when they want... And the chat eventually disbands when all participants leave/log)

As for helping newbies meet random new people in the community who aren't their friends yet, perhaps a character race specific chat could be an interesting option too - eg you get automatically put into a worldchat with all other ppl currently online playing a character of the same race as the character your are playing at the moment... Obviously then you can switch to diff alts if u wanted to meet diff ppl (unless all your chars are goblin or something lol)

Could this feature be used to coordinate players in events? Especially since we have some events that requires people to leave their guild to enter.

We could really do with arenas that suppress all forms of chat, guild, party, pages, maybe even general chat.
I'll post this up on a separate suggestion thread so this one doesn't go off topic
