Gold cost to upgrade could be based on the cost of the item (all items have a selling price, not sure about buying price).
Ingredients needed could be based on item colour and or type.

Expansion (sorta):
You need to mine something, each time you mine gives a chance of being attacked by monsters being attracted to the sound.
You need to gather wood, you could disturb something in its home or attracted again by sound (need to cut tree down).
You need to kill the foozle to gather its blood (poor foozle).

Anyway, just ideas. It would be a long long time before id be trying to upgrade stuff no matter what system is used :D

Could definitely be done without overhaul.

Gold cost to upgrade = 15 x Selling Price

Items required to upgrade = Reagent of same quality (introducing a Reagent for each quality of item) and a number of copies of the item inversely proportional to the rarity of the item. Common would be say 10 copies, Uncommon would be 6, Rare maybe 4, Ultra rare maybe 2.

Since the game seems to be about items humming with power, the reagents could have various hum strengths visible in the descriptions.

So could use existing rank system, add one new mechanic and an NPC to facilitate it and there you have it a OAD upgrade system that isn't overly complex but requires investment.

I would definitely say cap the items though. Maybe the smithy just converts a brill into a radiant? Unsure the best way to handle it, but that seems right.

If that's the case it wouldn't be a smithy, but a crazy enchanter who now seeks to equip adventurers for his own crazed agenda whilst accumulating wealth. We could name the crazed agenda wealth hungry enchanter Trump, maybe. :o

I already suggested this lol. I think it's fair considering the difficulty difference in obtaining greens vs purples.

Going from Brill > Radiant sounds right. You could do high/soft hums as well, should be the same thing in the end. I guess going the Hum route leaves room for a future upgrade if a radiant scroll is ever a thing. Or you could do perfect hums, but I think the costs should be higher if you want to do perfect.

Actually... Radiant Enchant could be a perk from the level reset from 25th (as in you have to use up a perk to get it, you do not just get it... or you actually do get it when you go back to 25th?... maybe perk best?) Just an idea.

Can we save radiant for the level 50 system? Imagine op level 20 items to level
