Can mention of a continent being destroyed but not actually name it. At least that's what I would do to avoid conflict with Lance and his whole ROK content belongs to him deal.

You've just described a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by what kind of natural disaster? Was this an unexpected event or a battle of divinity? What is the time period - is this 1 year after total world carnage or 100 years? Does the world look like a scorned wasteland or is this a century later and the world has somewhat returned to normal and has been rebuilt in a new image?

There's something highly intriguing with this idea that the world has been complete destroyed and Ember found refuge on an unscathed island or atop a mountain. What's nice about this story is there's a solid foundation for why the world starts small, surrounded by wasteland or blocked by landslides, floods, or lava fields. New cities aren't just stumble upon, but built slowly. What starts out a handful of farms at the edge of our new known realm can be slowly built into a city as the map expands.

There's also this nice idea that we're not the only remaining inhabitance of the world and overtime new cities are found in areas that survived the chaos.

This is important because as you imagine this world you've described, there may not be lavish kingdoms built of granite and stone but instead smaller farm towns or fisheries. As we write descriptions for content and find images for the game consider how this new world would look. Weapons and Armors probably aren't those of Mithril but instead the hides of creatures and objects of magic.

I also personally like this idea that it was a battle of the old gods that destroyed the worlds and each other in the mix and now our people worship new, lesser gods. We should also set this sometime after the great divinity war where any mention of Syndar or the old gods are simple generalized myths and rumors as ancient stories. This way we can't "hint" to things, without saying it.

------------

Sorry to jump in here late to the game, but a good story will shape the content you all create and I think that's far more important than throwing some squares together and calling it a OAD before any of this is created.

I like this person, we're keeping them.

But I'm still really wary of mentioning anything at all to do with ROK, even in passing or just references in the back story, but I think that's my inner creative writer rebelling against the idea of basically making playable fan fiction. There are enough creative people hanging out here that we don't need to rely on ROK's lore.

Like the idea for sure. Old world destroyed had to seek refuge in these new lands. Chris did say somewhere (cant seem to find it) that he didnt mind if we mentioned rok in the story.

I'm with Satsujin and probably have a stronger vested interest than most in not referencing RoK.

If anything, I simply mean that these nods back to RoK lore aren't for us to steal but simply easter eggs for those of us that continue down this path of Ember.

I'm going to push one more time on the importance of story, and it maybe be too far. Say all of you decide to move forward with this destructed world of sorts. Doesn't a conversation about Universal banking seems sort of out of place in this world? Maybe this is a good reason why this story doesn't work, or maybe it will help inform your decision for how gold exists in this world.

You can use this story to not only enhance content, but to help shape game play.

Okay, so I made a brief attempt at creating a centralized lore to be built off of as we go along. It does reference ROK in some roundabout ways, but does so in a definitive, "this clearly does not exist any longer" way, while still allowing for the occasional easter egg to be added for those of us who would like to be nostalgic.

This brief lore (along with a couple points for what it would mean for both builders and roleplayers) can be read on Google Docs ( https://docs.google.com/document/d/115I ... sp=sharing ) instead of just being shot over to the Dropbox so it's accessible to everyone, and also because the word processor I use saves in ODT and I know mobile OSes have issues with that format.

Since Chris nearly has a playable client put together, I'd like to have a centralized lore at least decided on, that way we can be sure cities and such will fit into it without everyone needing to pull reasons out of their asses. My main complaint with ROK was that no one had an archive of the central story behind it available, so when I started helping out with build, I had to asspull everything and hope it pretended to fit with everything else.

Sounds great to me. Really lays a nice foundation for everything without encroaching on anything we shouldn't.
