Builders, Help, and Additional Tools

Postby NiteHawk » Sun May 22, 2016 12:51 pm

Hey guys.

The next large update will have some nice tools to help with adding files directly in game. How it will work is that a builder will upload the files to a temp area on the server, the server will then take and process these files (with a command). All the files uploaded will then have a 'Development' ticker in them that will separate them from Released files.

These are restrictions to this however:
-You cannot override non development files (Files that are in game and released), only I can do that.
-Development files can never be attached to released files. This means you will have to /warp to it.
-Only I can convert development files to released files. Once they are released, you cannot change them unless I (or a high ranker in the future) adjusts their mode again.

This will allow you guys to build easily. Any items in dev mode will wipe when you move or warp from the said square, so you can at least test them directly (or test drops.)

---

Anyways, if you want to be an actual builder, please PM me. I already know of a few that want too, but I'll be selecting 3-4 based on how active people been and the work they have contributed so far. If you don't get in yet, it just means keep trying. Please don't apply to be a builder if you simply don't have the time. If you want to build here and there, that's OK, I will add your room files/test them etc for now, but I really do want active gents/ladies.

Lastly I'm looking for a test committee of sorts. For example, we need some people to test monsters and modify them before they are released. We need to scale EXP properly on this. That will be their job, modifying and testing numbers. They can also comment on current races/classes to help balance them. PM me on this.

I'm also looking for some people who want to work on the WIKI. PM me if you want to do that as well. You can obviously do this too if you want to build/test as well.

I just registered and tried to PM but it wouldn't let me. Chris, hit me up on here or in the game. I'll idle in tavern. I'm interested in helping with this project, too. Looking forward to hearing from you.

New forum members can't send PMs. You will get that ability after racking up about 10 posts or so. As for building, I would suggest that you ask one of the builders or loremasters to work with you. Although you might have good ideas, translating them to game format is more work than most realize. Also, it's a thankless job that eats into your enjoyment of the game.

There are several common mistakes new builders make that just talking with builders will help you avoid. You want to stay away from copyright issues. Names of items and places can be difficult to either find a good naming method or a good mythology website. Sure you can build a 100 square area that looks cool but does it need to be 100 squares? Overbuilding can be just as bad as under-building. You have to stay constant within the lore so make sure you run things by the loremaster. Never have too many monsters of different names in your area since players like to use macros and having to have 8 macros to level in the area is a pain. Accept that you aren't king... there are people better and more knowledgeable than you who will point out mistakes that you will make.

Finally... as a builder you have to stay away from any OaD area you build until others have had time to figure it out and the new OaD is in game. That means that by the time you get to run it, there will be many groups who already fight to get the item. It's not a quick way to more power in game.

yes I am aware of all of this, that's why I wasn't planning on attempting this without some sort of assistance, as for doing a Oad area, if I would build one I wouldn't think of doing it for quite awhile, I'm more interested in helping getting the game going good than anything else,

I'd suggest helping out by testing areas thoroughly. Adding more builders to the mix doesn't always speed up growth but testing areas is always valuable. I'm avoiding doing anything build wise myself because I think I'll add more value playing and testing. :D

hey if that's what they would prefer me to do I'm all for it, I'm willing to help out however I can without doing the wiki since I don't fully know the game yet.

Hey Nitehawk,

Not sure if you remember, but I use to be on the build staff for RoK as well as Aleveria & Alura back when Tanjir was still around. I built a few areas there. I also created artwork for each room, from the credits I seen where you thanked Mike Im willing to bet theres a few of my room pics in game lol. If you need any help I would be willing to offer my assistance. Its been awhile since Ive messed with anything like this, but Im sure its like riding a bike lol

I do however work and have a family so it would have to be in my spare time. Just let me know. Good to see you decided to create your own thing. I was pretty bummed when I found out RoK had died for good.

Can talk to Sat about getting some info on how to build and trying out something small before I give out any roles.
