I was just curious about everyone's thoughts on inventory management for Ember. So far, we have no knapsacks and items stack in varying quantities. We also get a vault with 40 slots by default.
I was thinking that it may be a good idea to have the vault act as a gold sink where you upgrade it to gain additional slots (start with like 5?). Also, do we actually want knapsacks? Personally, I'd be okay never having to manage knapsacks like they were in RoK. I'd prefer having a limit to their use (1 per character and usable out of combat). This way you could have rare drop knapsacks or even crafted ones if NiteHawk does a crafting system one day.
Thoughts on the state of inventory? Cool ideas?

Been discussed already in detail.

I think it was decided on one variable "knapstack" style upgrade. Of course this wasn't going to go in until the new client was available. Since Chris doesn't have the files for the new client, it isn't going to happen any time soon.
As for upgrading the vault with gold (Like the WoW bank for those who play) it is an interesting idea. Personally I don't like it but I can see how it would be good. If it were implimented though I'd rather see it start at around 24 slots and then build from there in groups (i.e. a full row on the vault page). The main reason I don't like the idea is that some people (I would be one) would dump massive amounts of potions and food in their bank for alts to use so they don't have to buy/sell dropped items. Actually I do that already with characters that don't use mana or my mana users and hp food.

The vault can typically already be upgraded. I just have it set to a default of 50. Depends how people would feel on it. I'd defo start around 20-25 though, and we can max it to 50-100.
We talked about knapsacks and just having one that increases your total slots +6 (max). but not going to do this until the new client, (whenever that is). Even without it for now I think the inventory is 'ok' but it won't hurt to add. WAY TO MISS DISCUSSIONS (but yeah I agree with you on not having tons of knapsacks and annoying interfaces for it.
With the new interface I can just drop 6 more slots downwards in the inventory area without effecting the client since the sidebar is pretty easy to adjust height wise, done deal 8)
Re: Inventory / Vault discussion
Psh that was just knapsacks. I'm more interested in the entire inventory system. Like is the current number of slots good/bad? Could it be better?
(and ya, I missed that post lolol).
As for the vault, I only suggest it because one of the big issues with RoK before was a lack of out-flow for gold, which eventually made gold pretty worthless. In fact, this issue was true for weapons/armor too because they never break/need replacing.

Re: Inventory / Vault discussion
So far to me inventory slots look sufficient, im not sure though in the future when we have to deal with oads with loads of keys, or crafting with loads of ingredients what would happen. Maybe keyrings? Also houses can solve later storage slot needs.
Mac : they crash different
Re: Inventory / Vault discussion
I think we want a reason for people to buy houses so I figured that's why we were keeping them somewhat limited. Consider with stacking and the vault there's a lot more room on here than ever was with Rok too. Anyways I'm up for a gold sink or cash sink for subscribing players to get something bigger.
Re: Inventory / Vault discussion
Houses could have more specialized vaults, in order to store more weapons, items used for crafting/potions/whatever that might come in that aspects, regular potions and so on. Renting houses was a decent gold sink (Personally I remember having to farm for gold in order to pay the house every once in a while :p ) But I think one shouldn't be penalized with losing the house if you can't pay it. Maybe just block it (Hey, life gets in the way sometimes)
I am all for purchasing upgrade slots for the vault. I think that's an excellent gold sink. The initial costs could be low, then they could be linear and then they could be exponential.
For example:
Initial stash: 50
50-70: low cost (logarithmic)
70-100: Linear cost
100+: Exponential cost
