Don't get me wrong, I think Paladin's are really strong in solo PVE play. I'm just thinking about once they get to Guard, giving them something that keeps them worth playing in a group because they won't be as useful in the traditional ways.

This, of course, is all assuming we're basing the thought process on how the game was balanced before. Obviously, some racial balancing needs to happen and that can swing things in a different direction for all classes.

Well deathbane is a multi target spell and with groups and shared exp how it is now a pally or a guard In a group could be pwnage

Why not think of Paladin's in other games. For instance, Warcraft 3 or even one of their incarnations in WoW. Give them the ability to have "auras" that affect everything in the square. Protect wouldn't be the only thing they have then. In fact, if other suggestions were put in play they would have the ability to change between abilities making them useful in many different situations.
