New class idea

Postby Grahf » Wed May 25, 2016 9:15 pm

So I've been harboring an idea for a Blade Mage since the golden days of RoK. Basically we already have a knight-priest and a knight-steve irwin so why not a knight mage? Before thinking the class would be op, hear me out. You would be swapping overall damage for versatility. It would have an average physical attack probably on par with a ranger or knight as a base. Then it would get the simpler versions of some of the spells. For instance the weakest dmg spell and healing spell, a light spell, invisibility spell(possibly nerfed so it can only be used on self), and maybe one other class specific spell(possibly an enchant weapon which would tie them better to the idea since they are proficient at both). This class would fill a similar role as a ranger and paladin and will hopefully be able to balance with them. Also it is adding another unique option for players and game depth. Ill keep adding to the idea but i would love any input.

I don't know if the game needs more hybrid classes. Especially if you're resorting to giving them existing, and weak spells. What I'd be more interested in is talking about plans for 25+, because I assume that is definitely going to happen. This sounds like it would be a good option for a prestige class.

Yea that's how I feel too. I think we should get all the classes balanced out polished up and then level 25+. dont get me wrong I'm all for more classes (and you idea is interesting) I just think there's a ton of work to do before.

I'm definitely not opposed to new classes but I don't think those new classes should be two classes combined, if that makes sense. I pitched a blacksmith class on another thread that would have to do with item forging and things of that nature. The blacksmith serves a purpose no other class currently does. Making a dark guardian, persay, is an interesting idea but one I think would be kind of cool to like... I dunno, maybe do a quest for? A paladin that goes on a quest to learn dark crafts, hits level 26, and boom, starts learning shit like zot or whatever.

I see your point, but i think this class brings more than just another hybrid class. It has always bugged me that games only ever have an elderly or frail wizard class or a big dumb warrior class. I feel like realistically, if people lived in an old world universe where magic was real they would be both strong and also learn magic. But obviously the difference between someone studying both arts as opposed to someone locked away in a study learning only magic is that their spells would not be as powerful. And i am all for giving them more potent spells, but i figure we had to keep them weaker than a mage or else who would choose a mage over a mage that could also attack well?

I would do all of the testing, leveling and figuring out the balance so beyond coding it in i dont see why not. For now we just need to clone a ranger class and give it some spells and i can test it from there.

I like the idea of paladins going dark. Maybe even give it a vampric or otherworldly story line of why they go evil.

At the 25 mark it would be neat to go a different direction with the character. Im not sure if dark light with every character would work. Perhaps barbarians or knights could branch into more offensive or more defensive, mages could maybe go into more direct dmg or group damage, etc.

Another way to make it more interesting could be that when a shield is enchanted it can block spells and treats spells as a normal attack.

I've always been fond of the blade mage idea for RoK (and now Ember). It'd be a character that could wear full armor like a paladin, but instead of heal and protect, it would have the same level damage spell and perhaps a new and unique spell or ability specific to that class. The benefits would be similar to Paladin in that you get an armored caster rather than an armored healer, but more fun to play.

If we're already in the process of balancing all other classes, and we have someone who's willing to do the testing, I think now would be a better time to look at it rather than some indeterminate future.

I actually never thought of it as a new take on a cleric before...that could work too as long as they arent stuck with weird worg claws as their weapon. I think that due to their offensive capabilities heavy armor might be OP. But i guess we wont know until its tested.

And thats what i was thinking. Dont wait to introduce a new untested character into a finished game. Throw it in early and get the bugs ironed out now while everything else is being worked on.

It could be something like leather armor and duel daggers. More of a practical and professional fighter than a knight mage. There are multiple possibilities.
